Odd News-Woman, 72, moves after finding snakes in apartment

MIDDLETOWN, Del. - When 72-year-old Gladys Dressner first saw two snakes last in her new apartment last month, she froze. Days later, when an eight-inch snake crawled across her bed, she screamed. Finally, after stepping on a baby black rat snake, she moved.

A Maryland exterminator killed six snakes that were captured in Dressner's Middletown apartment. All six were about eight inches long and harmless. The exterminator suspects a previous tenant kept an adult snake as a pet.

Dressner, who has high blood pressure, diabetes and a heart condition, wrote a letter to her property managers demanding to be moved to a new apartment.

Property manager John Mastriana said she won't have to pay October's rent or moving costs.

Sydney — U.S. and Australian authorities are investigating the smuggling of snakes and venomous spiders that were found in a parcel in Sydney, an official said Wednesday.

Customs Service officers in Australia's biggest city discovered five harmless pythons and two dangerous South American tarantulas at the Sydney airport last week when they X-rayed a package that had been posted from the United States, Customs investigations manager Richard Janeczko said.

The creatures were later killed because they posed a quarantine risk, Janeczko said in the capital, Canberra.

Janeczko would not say from where in the United States the parcel — declared as baby toys and shirts — had been posted.

He said Australian officials based in Washington were communicating with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials on a U.S. investigation into who had sent the parcel.

In Australia, charges were expected to be laid against at least one alleged importer after customs officers and police raided a Sydney home Tuesday and seized evidence, Janeczko said.

Importing snakes or spiders without a license can attract maximum penalties of 10 years in prison and a $92,000 fine.

Odd News-Mamba bite exposes illicit Tokyo snake collection

TOKYO (Reuters) - A Japanese man living with 51 venomous snakes, including cobras and huge mambas, in his apartment in central Tokyo was caught when he called an ambulance after one of them bit him.

The 41-year-old Tokyo manual labourer was arrested on Wednesday on his release from hospital because keeping dangerous snakes without a local government licence is illegal in Japan, broadcaster NHK said.

He was rushed to hospital last month after being bitten by a deadly 1.85-metre green mamba as he was trying to feed it, and at one point lost consciousness as a result of the bite.

"Of course I'm shocked. It's revolting," one elderly neighbour told NHK.
