Iran: Death penalty for man accused of homosexuality

Tehran, 23 Sept. (AKI) - Nemat Safavi, arrested almost three years ago at the age of 16, has been condemned to death by a court in Ardebil, in the northwest Iranian Azerbaijan region.

Nemat has not killed anyone, stolen anything or even carried out any political activism.
Nemat has been accused of having homosexual relations. While that was not stated during the court case, he was accused of "sexual relations that were not admitted".

A year ago, on a visit to Colombia University in New York, Iran's hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said "there were no homosexuals" in Iran in response to a question from a student.

Stupid News-Help-wanted ad for nanny: `My kids are a pain'

Stupid News-Help-wanted ad for nanny: `My kids are a pain'

NEW YORK - It was an unusually honest ad for a live-in nanny, a 1,000-word tome beginning, "My kids are a pain." But it worked, attracting a brave soul who's never been a nanny before.

"If you cannot multitask, or communicate without being passive aggressive, don't even bother replying," Rebecca Land Soodak, a mother of four on Manhattan's Upper East Side, wrote Aug. 19 in her advertisement on Craigslist.

"I can be a tad difficult to work for. I'm loud, pushy and while I used to think we paid well, I am no longer sure."

This being the age of instant communications, the ad took on a life of its own, making the rounds of parenting blogs and e-mail inboxes and inspiring an article in Thursday's New York Times.

Soodak, a 40-year-old painter whose husband owns a wine store, eventually hired Christina Wynn, a 25-year-old University of Virginia graduate, to take care of Rubin, 12; Ellis, 9; and Shay and Cassie, both 6.

"I made a commitment to stay in the job for at least a year," Wynn told the Times. "I met the oldest child, but not the others, which my mother said was crazy — to accept the job without meeting all the kids. So we'll see." She noted that one of the pluses is that the children are all in school for several hours each day.

Some other excerpts from the listing: "If you are fundamentally unhappy with your life, you will be more unhappy if you take this job, so do us all a favor and get some treatment or move to the Rockies, but do not apply for employment with us."

And this: "Also, if you suspect all wealthy women are frivolous, we are not for you."

And this: "I have all sorts of theories on how to stack my dishwasher, and if you are judgmental about Ritalin for ADHD, or think such things are caused by too much sugar, again, deal-break city."

No word yet on whether a sequel to "The Nanny Diaries" is in the works. Meanwhile, Soodak tells the Times: "I hope she likes it here. I sent the ad to one of my old sitters and she said she felt it was pretty accurate, which sort of stung a little bit."

Stupid News - Waterboarding an attraction at amusement park

Stupid News - Waterboarding an attraction at amusement park This is just stupid!

Waterboarding an attraction at amusement park

By Ritsuko Ando

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A man with a black hood pours water on the face of a prisoner in an orange jumpsuit strapped to a table: no, it's not Guantanamo Bay naval base, but New York's Coney Island amusement park.
The scene using robotic dolls is an installation built by artist Steve Powers to criticize waterboarding, a simulated drowning technique the United States has admitted using on terrorism suspects, but that rights group say is torture.

"Waterboard Thrill Ride" beckons a sign along with cartoon character "SpongeBob SquarePants" who appears tied down and exclaiming: "It don't Gitmo better!"

The public can peek through window bars and feed a dollar into the slot to bring the robotic dolls into action, one more attraction in the beachfront amusement park in the New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

"Anyone can see this is painful from 50 feet away," said Powers, who had previously been painting signs and storefronts in the area. "I wanted people to understand the psychological ramifications of this."

Marion Tracey, 57, from New Jersey, said she found the installation disturbing. It made her think of her father who had nightmares after returning from World War II. "In all wars, horrible things happen," she said. "I'd rather not see it."

Alex Soto, 23, said he thought it was a good thing for people to learn about waterboarding, but he added: "It is pretty twisted."

Stupid News - Man blows up apartment spraying for bugs?

Stupid News - Man blows up apartment spraying for bugs?

NEW YORK, July 21 - A New Jersey man trying to exterminate insects in his apartment blew it up instead, the New York Daily News reported on Monday.

Isias Vidal Maceda was unhurt in the incident, but 80 percent of his apartment was destroyed, Eatontown, New Jersey police told the newspaper.

The accident occurred as Maceda was spraying for pests in his kitchen. Somehow the bug spray ignited a blast that blew out the apartment's front windows and triggered a fire that quickly spread, the newspaper said.

Police told the newspaper that the Saturday blaze also caused smoke damage to the apartment above.

Stupid News - Cook accused of stealing lobster tails in his pants

Stupid News - Cook accused of stealing lobster tails in his pants

NEW YORK - Maybe he was trying to beat the heat. A Brooklyn restaurant cook is accused of stealing frozen lobster tails by stuffing them down his pants.

The Brooklyn district attorney's office said Tuesday that Raymundo Flores has been arraigned on misdemeanor charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property.

Co-workers called 911 on Sunday to report a crustacean caper at the walk-in freezer at Junior's Restaurant. Police say they found lobster tails that Flores allegedly had hidden in his pants and in bandages on his legs.

Flores, a Manhattan resident, has been freed without bail. He's due back in court on July 3.

The name of his attorney could not immediately be determined.

Stupid News - New York's Original Kazoo Co. stays true to name

Stupid News - New York's Original Kazoo Co. stays true to name

EDEN, N.Y. - The name of the place says it all: The Original Kazoo Co. And, boy, do its owners mean original.
The same belt and pulley machines that stamped and shaped the world's first metal kazoos circa 1900 still stamp and shape kazoos today. The machines are still in the same building, making the same ker-thwunk sound as they perforate, fold and shape.

The finished product hasn't changed, either. The palm-sized, submarine-shaped musical instrument still makes a tinny vibration when someone hums into it.

If there was ever the temptation to modernize the kazoo-making operation as the business changed hands over the years, it didn't last.

"It really would kind of spoil the fun of coming here if you couldn't see things as they were," Karen Smith said as she scanned the factory floor, now more working museum than manufacturing facility. "It's wonderful for our country to know that long ago, they invented this way of manufacturing and it still works today."

The Original Kazoo Co. operates on Main Street in a farm town southwest of Buffalo known as much for its yearly corn festival as kazoos.

The plant opened in 1907 as a sheet metal workshop, producing stove and furnace parts and peanut vending machines. It began making kazoos in 1916 after its owner was approached about creating a metal version of the wooden instrument that had been around since the 1840s.

Inside her gift shop, Smith demonstrates the songs heard most often when adult visitors get hold of a kazoo: "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" and "I've Been Working on the Railroad."

Children?

"`Jingle Bells,'" she said. "It doesn't matter if it's July or August, they're all playing `Jingle Bells.' It's amazing."

The place gets its share of tours by students and senior citizens, all eager to try out the product. To say it gets pretty noisy is "putting it mildly," shop forewoman Sue Cruz said with a laugh.

What has changed over the years is ownership. Today, the site is operated by Suburban Adult Services Inc., a nonprofit organization serving mentally and physically disabled adults. It inherited the factory in 2002 as a donation from Robert and David Berghash, after the Berghashes sold the rights to make the standard kazoo to its largest distributor, Woodstock Percussion in New York's Hudson Valley.

As part of the deal, the original factory stayed in Eden and is allowed to make and sell 5,000 standard kazoos a year. They sell in the gift shop for $1.99. The part-time work force of about 15 people from Suburban Adult Services spends the rest of the time making kazoo trumpets, french horns, trombones and other specialty kazoos that are sold on site and to distributors.

The deal also included rights to the name, Original American Kazoo Co., so the Eden operation became the Original Kazoo Co.

"It's someplace I enjoy walking into," Tony Annunziato, associate executive director of SASI, said of the shop, where more than 20 machines are run by a 10-horsepower motor spinning overhead shafts and leather belts. "It's a nice atmosphere. You don't see that in industry."

The operation gets visitors and orders from around the world, including a recent request for 200 kazoos destined for an orphanage in South Africa.

"Music transcends all language and kazoo really provides that to everyone," Smith said. "You don't have to be a practiced musician in order to participate."

There is a technique, albeit simple, to playing: Hum, don't blow. Some people struggle with that, Smith said.

The key is the small circular Mylar resonator covering a hole on the top of the kazoo, which is vibrated by the humming.

"If you were to blow into a kazoo, absolutely nothing would happen," Smith said.

The kazoo is believed to be the only musical instrument to be invented and produced in the United States. Today, the Eden factory produces the only American-made metal version.

Governor Spitzer and The Escort " Ashley Dupre"

Well by now the media blitz on Governor of New York Eliot Spitzer has about reached it's climax. The story is now that Governor Spitzer and his wife had affairs! Read the article below!
More pics are pouring into the web of the high priced call girl Kristin "Ashley" Dupre.

The successor to Eliot Spitzer, the disgraced New York governor, has admitted that both he and his wife had had extra-marital affairs.

David Paterson's admission signally failed to sweep away the controversy that has engulfed New York state politics since Mr Spitzer was exposed as a regular user of prostitutes.

Mr Paterson admitted at a press conference, with his wife, Michelle, that he had had relationships with several women, including a state employee.

The Patersons said they both had affairs during a time when their marriage was headed toward divorce. But they sought counselling and have built a stronger marriage and family.

"We dealt with it as a family," Mrs Paterson said. A marriage has peaks and valleys... no marriage is perfect. I think we have a marriage like many Americans. Elected officials are really just reflections of the people we represent."

His admission came a day after he told the New York Daily News of one affair between 1999 and 2001.

Unlike his confrontational predecessor, Mr Paterson, New York's first black governor and the second of any state to be registered blind, is popular among fellow politicians.

Wow The Governor Spitzer Prostitue

Wow, What a hot chick! But $5,000 per hour!

The Governor was exposed as Client 9 of the Emperor’s Club VIP call-girl ring after he was caught on an FBI telephone tap.

Eliot Spitzer resigned as Governor of New York yesterday after a sex scandal put an abrupt end to the political career of a rising star who seemed destined for the White House.

Mr Spitzer, a crusading former prosecutor once known as the Sheriff of Wall Street, said that he would “leave public life” two days after he was identified as Client 9 in a $5,500-an-hour international call-girl ring.

He will be replaced on Monday by his deputy, David Paterson, who will be New York’s first black Governor and the first blind one in US history.

Mr Spitzer, who is married with three daughters, emerged from his Fifth Avenue apartment to announce his resignation yesterday.

“I am deeply sorry that I did not live up to what was expected of me,” he told a press conference, with his wife, Silda, at his side.

“I look at my time as Governor with a sense of what might have been . . . There is much more to be done. I cannot allow my private failings to disrupt the people’s work.

“In the past few days I have begun to atone for my private failings with my wife, Silda, my children and my entire family. The remorse I feel will always be with me.”

Mr Spitzer’s lawyer, a former chief of the prosecutor’s public corruption unit, failed in an attempt to use his resignation as a bargaining chip in negotiations with her former bosses.

The Governor was exposed as Client 9 of the Emperor’s Club VIP call-girl ring after he was caught on an FBI telephone tap setting up a tryst with a “American, petite, very pretty brunette” prostitute named Kristen.

She was identified last night as a failed rhythm-and-blues singer born Ashley Youmans but now known as Ashley Alexandra Dupré.

“I just don’t want to be thought of as a monster,” Ms Dupré, 22, born in New Jersey and now living in New York’s Flatiron district, told The New York Times. “This has been a very difficult time. It is complicated.”

On her MySpace page Ms Dupré said that she had left “a broken family” at 17 and had used drugs, “been broke and homeless”.

“But I made it,” she adds. “I’m still here and I love who I am.”

Ms Dupré travelled by train from New York to Washington to meet Mr Spitzer in an hotel on the eve of Valentine’s Day. An alleged madam was caught on the phonetap asking “Kristen” whether Client 9 had sought unsafe sex.

The New York Post reported that he had asked her to perform oral sex on him without a condom but she had insisted on protection.

Mr Spitzer’s embarrassment was compounded yesterday by a prostitute called Sienna, 22, who told ABC News that he paid her for sex two years ago while he was still state attorney-general, New York’s top law-enforcement official. She said that he tipped her well and “didn’t do anything that wasn’t clean”.

The investigation began when his bank notified authorities of suspicious money transfers to a shell company.

Mr Spitzer allegedly wanted to transfer more than $10,000 to the ring’s front company, QAT Consulting Group, but broke it up into smaller amounts to avoid the bank being required to report it to the Government. The Wall Street Journal said that he made three payments of roughly $5,000 in the spring and summer of 2007.
