Man who went overboard from a luxury cruise ship rescued

Florida - A Miami Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued a man who went overboard from a luxury cruise ship early Sunday. Ronald Shulman, 62, went overboard the Silver Shadow cruise ship around 3 a.m. Sunday morning. He was found swimming 20 miles southeast of Government Cut around 7:45 a.m. It is not known how Shulman, who was traveling alone, went overboard. Cruise operators noticed Shulman was missing and contacted the Coast Guard.....More

Stupid News-Return to sender: 2 Austrians rescued from mailbox

VIENNA – Austrian authorities aren't about to give these pranks their stamp of approval.

Frustrated officials say rescuers have been deployed twice this week to break open large mailboxes after two children locked themselves inside in separate incidents.

Firefighters in the westernmost province of Vorarlberg say the latest incident occurred Thursday evening in the village of Schwarzach, where an 8-year-old boy climbed inside a mailbox and couldn't get out.

Postal officials weren't able to find the key, so rescuers used welding torches and bolt cutters to open the box and free the child. He was uninjured.

Authorities say an almost identical incident happened Monday in nearby Feldkirch, where a 4-year-old boy locked himself inside a mailbox.

Rower rescued off Australia after 10-month journey

SYDNEY, Australia — An Italian adventurer who spent 10 months rowing more than 9,500 nautical miles (18,000 kilometers) across the Pacific has been rescued a mere 65 nautical miles short of his goal — Australia — after rough weather sapped him of his final shreds of energy.

Alex Bellini, who began his voyage off Peru in February, contacted his wife Friday to say he was too exhausted to row his 25-foot (7.5 meter) boat any further, despite being nearly in sight of the eastern Australian town of Laurieton.

Bellini's wife contacted authorities, and an Australian tug boat towed the 30-year-old to shore. They reached Newcastle, 100 miles (160 kilometers) north of Sydney, Saturday morning.

Although looking weary and thin and sporting a bushy beard, Bellini grinned and appeared in high spirits as he was reunited with his tearful wife, Francesca.

"I'm feeling good. I'm exhausted," Bellini told The Associated Press. "I need some time to relax."

A strong wind had hampered his efforts to get closer to shore for days. By Friday, he said, his energy was gone.

"For the next few days, the weather would have been even worse," said Bellini, who has also rowed across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. "It has been a grueling, grueling effort."...more

Odd News-86 cats rescued from 2-bedroom condo in Colorado

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. - A Glenwood Springs animal shelter was trying to find homes for 86 cats rescued from a two-bedroom condominium. The Colorado Animal Rescue Shelter received the cats on Wednesday. Since then, workers have been scrambling to accommodate the animals at area shelters and homes.

Garfield County sheriff's spokeswoman Tanny McGinnis said the cats were strays taken in by a woman. The woman called for help, saying she couldn't take care of the cats while moving from her Battlement Mesa condo.

The woman's name was not released because no charges were filed.

Florida - A Florida man and his son were rescued from the Atlantic Ocean Sunday after being swept away by the outgoing tide the night before while swimming near Daytona Beach. Walter Marino, 46, and his son Chris Marino, 12, both from Winter Park, Fla., were found Sunday morning after more than 12 hours at sea, the U.S. Coast Guard said. The father was found by a boater around 7:30 a.m. Sunday approximately 8 miles from shore.
