Police: Man seeks ride from detective after heist

SAGINAW, Mich. – Authorities say a parolee who robbed a Michigan bank was caught when he tried to hitch a ride from an undercover police detective.

Mark E. White was arraigned Friday on charges that include bank robbery and making a false bomb threat. He is being held at the Saginaw County Jail on $755,000 bond. It was not clear whether White had an attorney. Police did not immediately return a message seeking comment Saturday.

Authorities tell The Saginaw News that White flagged down Saginaw Township Detective Scott Jackson on Wednesday after the bank robbery a few blocks away.

White was paroled June 16 after serving time for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and violating an earlier parole.

Stupid News-Grandma, 92, is Michigan woman's matron of honor

SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Many brides-to-be pick best friends to serve as their maids or matrons of honor. But Erica Schultz's best buddy isn't a high school friend or a college pal. It's her 92-year-old grandmother.

Angelene Schultz will stand beside her granddaughter when the 26-year-old marries Mark James on Oct. 18 in Bay City.

"She is my best friend," said Erica, who owns a Web design business with her fiance. "When my grandpa died, she bought a house down the street from our family. We both needed someone.

"I still go over to her house every day, to get her mail and prescriptions," she told The Saginaw News.

Schultz used to run down the street to her grandmother's house during high school, to share her "teen drama" and have girlfriends sleep over. She even lived there for a year during college.

When Schultz met James in 2001, they stopped by Angelene Schultz's house on the night of their first date.

And the woman known as Busha or Granny-Mae has been no bystander in the wedding planning process.

She helped choose the wedding gown and will wear her own red dress to the ceremony.

"I feel it is a big honor for me to be in the wedding party, and I'm happy to do it, even if I do raise some eyebrows," said the woman who has five children, 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren

Strange News-Diabetic man mistaken for drunken driver and beaten

Strange News-Diabetic man mistaken for drunken driver and beaten

Michigan - A diabetic Detroit man was mistaken for a drunken driver by Allen Park and Dearborn police, and brutally beaten to the point that he had to have part of his brain surgically removed, the man’s wife and their attorney allege. Ernest Griglen, 59, has been comatose and on a ventilator since the June 15 incident, said attorney Arnold Reed of Farmington Hills.
Reed filed a lawsuit in federal court today against the Allen Park and Dearborn police departments and five officers on behalf of Griglen and his wife, Pamela Griglen. They’re seeking $20 million in damages.
According to the complaint, Griglen was driving south on the Southfield Freeway when he suffered a hypoglycemic episode. The complaint says Griglen exited his vehicle in an effort to summon the Allen Park officer. Then he was pulled over by an Allen Park Police officer. Dearborn officers also arrived on the scene to assist, according to the court document.
The complaint alleges that police came in contact with Griglen’s insulin pump in Griglen’s stomach and diabetes equipment in his vehicle, but still threw him headfirst into the ground.

“A reasonably competent police officer properly trained in the use of force would not have beat, assaulted and battered” Griglen, the complaint says.

But police reports from Allen Park and Dearborn released Monday to the Free Press under a Freedom of Information Act request tell a different tale. In her account, Allen Park Officer Tracie Brown said she had to wrestle Griglen to the ground after a five-mile car chase and he became combative.

Brown wrote in her report that she noticed Griglen stopped his car at a green light in the middle of Southfield Road just south of Pinecrest. When she approached him, he yelled something about getting into a verbal argument with his wife. But when she told him to pull over to the side of the road so he wouldn’t cause an accident, he drove off, she wrote.

Brown said she called for back-up and turned on her lights and sirens when Griglen continued northbound on Southfield Road. When he finally pulled over just south of the Ford Road exit, Griglen put his hands on the hood and wouldn’t answer Brown when she asked him why he wouldn’t stop, she wrote. And when she told him to put his hands behind his back to be handcuffed and arrested for fleeing and eluding, he locked his arms then started to run when Dearborn Police back-up arrived, she said.

Officer Brown reported that she grabbed the back of Griglen’s shirt to stop him. Brown and two Dearborn officers then wrestled him to the ground, she reported.

In a report filed by Dearborn Police officers, they claimed they had to spray Griglen with pepper spray to force him to comply.

Once Griglen was handcuffed and picked off the ground, Officer Brown reported that she noticed the insulin pump going into the side of Griglen’s body, a bloody nose and a bump on his forehead where he hit the cement after being wrestled to the ground.

Griglen started to complain about police stopping him, speaking in slurred words, the reports states. That prompted a Breathalyzer field test that found no alcohol. Griglen told the police he wanted medical attention because he wasn’t feeling well, Officer Brown reported.

Police took Griglen to the hospital. Though the report does not state which hospital, Allen Park Police confirm it was Oakwood Dearborn.

At a news conference today, Pamela Griglen said she and her husband had gone to see “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” on June 15. They had popcorn, candy and soda as they watched the flick and then he dropped her off at Fairlane Mall in Dearborn. She said she didn’t know where Ernest Griglen was driving to next, but soon she found herself at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn, where he was taken with head injuries.

“He said they beat him,” Pamela Griglen said, referring to Allen Park and Dearborn police officers. “He complained about his head.”

Since having brain surgery, Ernest Griglen has remained unconscious.

Allen Park Police Chief Dean Tamsen said today that city legal counsel advised him not to comment on the allegations.

“It’s a sad event for everybody involved,” Tamsen said this afternoon before the press conference.

Dearborn city spokeswoman Mary Laundroche, director of the Department of Public Information, declined to comment on officers’ actions.

“On the behalf of the city, we want to express concern for Mr. Griglen and his loved ones as they deal with his serious medical condition,” Laundroche said before the press conference. She also said the city had not received a copy of the lawsuit by this afternoon.

“It would be irresponsible to respond to a press conference held for dramatic purposes,” she added.

Stupid News:What are the odds? Son gets same dorm room as dad

Stupid News:What are the odds? Son gets same dorm room as dad

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Following in your father's footsteps by attending the same university is one thing. But moving into the same dorm room as your dad?

Mike Robell has found himself in B310 in Emmons Hall at Michigan State University — the very same room occupied by his father in 1978.

What are the odds? The East Lansing university has about 8,000 rooms.

The freshman's father, Rich Robell, 50, said he suspected it was his old room. It has the same floor and same wall color. The phone number is the same, too. The same broken window latch offered some key evidence.

The proof came from a university archivist, who located a 1978 student directory.

Housing complex manager Tim Knight says it's the first time in his 37-year tenure that he's aware of a parent and child having the same room by chance.

"I guess it was meant to be," said Rich Robell.

Odd News-Man says he found dead shark in Lake Michigan

Odd News-Man says he found dead shark in Lake Michigan

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - There's no telling what might turn up in Lake Michigan.

Rich Fasi of Traverse City says he found a dead 2-foot shark in the water while fishing on West Grand Traverse Bay on Wednesday.

The saltwater fish was a juvenile blacktip shark, said Mark Tonello, a fisheries biologist from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Tonello said someone might have caught the shark off the Atlantic Coast and kept it on ice while bringing it to northern Michigan.

Another possibility is that the dead shark was dumped by someone who had kept it as a pet, Tonello said.

Stupid News-Incomes fall in Michigan, number in poverty rises

No,do you think so! Wake up People!

Stupid News-Incomes fall in Michigan, number in poverty rises

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - Government data painted a bleak economic picture for Michigan, where the auto industry's downward plunge has rippled across the state.

Michigan was the only state where poverty rose last year, as well as the only one where incomes fell, according to U.S. Census Bureau statistics released Tuesday that illustrate the uniqueness of the state's economic swoon.

"It's really a depressing picture," said Amy Rynell, director of the Heartland Alliance Mid-America Institute on Poverty, an advocacy group based in Chicago.

Michigan's poverty rate was 14 percent, up from 13.5 percent in 2006 and more than a full percentage point above the national rate, which was virtually unchanged during the same period. The state's rate has grown steadily since 2000, when it was just above 10 percent. The number of people in poverty increased by 45,000 during 2006-07.

The 2007 median income in Michigan was $47,950, down 1.2 percent or $596 from the 2006 median of $48,546. The state's nationwide ranking slid from 24th to 27th.

Nationwide, the median household income rose to $50,233, a modest increase of $665 from the previous year, although it was the third consecutive annual rise. While the overall poverty rate held steady at 12.5 percent, Latinos, children and the foreign-born — demographic categories that overlap considerably — experienced significant increases.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm has emphasized diversifying the state's economy, promoting growth of industries such as defense contracting, alternative energy and film production. The Democratic governor and lawmakers this year boosted tax incentives for businesses adding jobs.

Last week, Granholm announced 20 new business expansions or relocations expected to bring $658 million in new investment to the state.

Whether such improvements will be enough to offset continued gloomy news from the automotive sector remains to be seen. But the 2007 statistics, reported in the Census Bureau's annual American Community Survey, offer little reason for optimism.

They also showed Michigan's rate of "extreme poverty" — a yearly income of less than half the poverty threshold, or $10,325 for a family of four — jumped from 6 percent in 2006 to 6.5 percent last year. Eight years ago, the rate was 4.8 percent.

"We know that people with incomes that low are living in unsafe conditions," Rynell said. "Children probably are not getting enough healthy food to eat. People may be living in shelters. Seniors are likely skipping dosages of medication to make ends meet."

The child poverty rate increased from 17.8 percent to 19 percent between 2006-07, while the national rate stood at 17.6 percent.

Detroit's poverty rate of 33.8 percent was highest among cities of 250,000 or more, while Kalamazoo and Flint tied for fifth among cities of 65,000 to 249,999 people. Both had rates of 35.5 percent.

"We know that many people are struggling harder and harder just to get by, and more vulnerable people are turning to public services for help," said Sharon Parks, president and CEO of the Michigan League for Human Services. "This reinforces the need to strengthen our strained safety net, and policymakers must pay attention to these startling figures."

In another report released Tuesday, the Census Bureau said 11 percent of Michigan residents had no health insurance coverage in 2007 — up from 10.4 percent in 2006 and 9.1 percent at the beginning of the decade.

But that was one category in which Michigan fared better than most other states. The national average of uninsured citizens was 15.5 percent, and Michigan ranked 11th best nationally in providing health coverage.

More than 18 percent of Michigan residents get some type of assistance through the state Department of Human Services, said Sheryl Thompson, acting director of outstate operations.

Although general cash assistance is declining, programs that provide food and emergency help with energy and medical bills are growing steadily. The Food Assistance Program is up 136 percent since December 2000.

Granholm will attend a "poverty summit" Nov. 13 in Detroit to discuss strategies for dealing with the problem, said Edward Woods III, spokesman for the department.

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Of Detroit Jailed-Will be Charged with assaulting an officer

**** Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Will Be Charged With Assaulting An Officer*******
Mayor Kwame in Detroit sex scandal case ordered jailed

DETROIT, Michigan (AFP) — The mayor of Detroit, Michigan, embroiled for months in a torrid sex scandal, was placed under arrest Thursday for violating a provision of his bond forbidding him from leaving the country.

A Detroit judge ordered embattled Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick jailed for a recent unauthorized trip he made to nearby Windsor, Canada, violating the terms of his bond.

His jailing seemed certain to ramp up efforts to force his resignation, which he so far has stubbornly resisted.

"I thought I made it clear to you that this court comes first in everything," Wayne County District Court Judge Ronald Giles told the beleaguered mayor in court shortly before ordering him detained.

For his part, the scandal-plagued mayor pleaded in court for another chance, explaining that he had made the unauthorized trip on city business.

"I don't believe that there is a person that's ever been through this process that respects it more than I do," Kilpatrick said, referring to the stress he has found himself under during months of legal proceedings.

Kilpatrick was indicted in March for lying under oath about an affair with his chief of staff and firing a police officer investigating reports of a wild party at the mayor's mansion.

All told, he faces eight felony counts ranging from conspiracy to perjury to misconduct in office to obstruction of justice.

The charges were filed after Kilpatrick abruptly instructed the city to settle a wrongful dismissal lawsuit by three police officers who said they were fired while investigating wrongdoing by the mayor and his security personnel.

Kilpatrick and former chief of staff Christine Beatty have been charged with perjury, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office.

The officers were awarded 8.4 million dollars after being sacked for investigating rumors that the mayor's wife interrupted a stripper party about six years ago at the mayor's office, local media reported.

Prosecutors accused Kilpatrick of obstruction of justice for settling the whistle-blower lawsuit in order to hide text message evidence of his affair.

Officials said Thursday that Kilpatrick would remain in jail until he either posts the full 75,000 dollars bond, or until his defense attorneys succeed in persuading a circuit court judge to overturn the decision.

Stupid News - Super Intelligent Spider monkey Escapes

Stupid News - Super Intelligent Spider monkey Escapes!
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - A spider monkey used a garden hose to scale the wall of a moat at a Michigan City zoo before being captured at a nearby boat dealership.

One of two spider monkeys recently added to the Washington Park Zoo broke out of its enclosure this week while workers were cleaning the moat, which had been emptied of water.

Zoo Director Johnny Martinez says workers had figured the monkeys would remain inside their enclosure during the cleaning despite the lack of water in the moat to act as a barricade.

Once past the moat Wednesday, the escaped monkey jumped onto the roof of a water filtration plant. Martinez says zoo staff recaptured it at the dealership atop a white and blue speedboat.

Martinez says the monkey is sociable and posed no danger to people.

Stupid News - Romp in woods ends in charges for airline workers

Stupid News - Romp in woods ends in charges for airline workers
HARRISBURG, Pa. - A pilot's nighttime romp in the woods with a flight attendant has ended with both suspended and under arrest, police said.

Jeffrey Paul Bradford, 24, and Adrianna Grace Connor, 24, both employees of Pinnacle Airlines Inc., were at a diner on Sunday night before they apparently decided to take a walk, police said.

"They told the officer they wanted to go do it in the woods, essentially," said Lower Swatara Township Police Sgt. Richard Brandt. "That's the best answer they had."

Things went awry when people who live in the neighborhood summoned police around 9:30 p.m., saying they had seen a naked man and an intoxicated woman.

A helicopter with heat-seeking equipment was called in, and Bradford was discovered hiding behind a shed shortly before midnight.

His only attire was a pair of flip-flops and a wristwatch.

Bradford, of Pittsburgh, was charged with indecent exposure, public drunkenness and other offenses. Connor, of Belleville, Mich., was charged with theft, public drunkenness and other offenses; police said she took a flashlight from a neighbor's vehicle.

The office of District Justice Michael John Smith, where Bradford and Connor were arraigned, said they were not represented by lawyers. Telephone listings for them could not be located by The Associated Press.

A spokesman for Pinnacle Airlines said the two were suspended while the company investigates.
